The Gospels: Authorized King James Version (Oxford World's Classics), by W.R. Owens

Jesus Christ is the central figure in Western culture, and one of the most influential in all human history. Almost everything we know about him is contained in four narratives of his life, death, and resurrection--the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This unique edition of the Gospels, in the Authorized King James version, provides readers with all the information they could need to appreciate the theological importance and literary and cultural significance of these great writings. The volume features an illuminating introduction by W. R. Owens, who guides the reader through the four Gospels in turn, highlighting how each offers its own distinctive and memorable portrait of Jesus, and discussing the importance of the 1611 translation and its influence. The book's explanatory notes clarify obscurities and allusions, ranging from aspects of life in first-century Palestine to seventeenth-century phraseology. There are also glossaries of Words and Terms, Persons, and Places, a chronology of the life of Jesus alongside historical events, and a map of Palestine in the time of Jesus.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

I found the introduction and the notes to each of the gospels to be really interesting. I got a good sense of the differences between the gospels and the writers (or communities) behind each one. The notes really show how connected the gospels are to some of the books of the old testament.

Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind, by Tim Groseclose

Dr. Tim Groseclose, a professor of political science and economics at UCLA, has spent years constructing precise, quantitative measures of the slant of media outlets. He does this by measuring the political content of news, as a way to measure the PQ, or "political quotient" of voters and politicians.

Among his conclusions are: (i) all mainstream media outlets have a liberal bias; and (ii) while some supposedly conservative outlets―such the Washington Times or Fox News' Special Report―do lean right, their conservative bias is less than the liberal bias of most mainstream outlets.

Groseclose contends that the general leftward bias of the media has shifted the PQ of the average American by about 20 points, on a scale of 100, the difference between the current political views of the average American, and the political views of the average resident of Orange County, California or Salt Lake County, Utah. With Left Turn readers can easily calculate their own PQ―to decide for themselves if the bias exists. This timely, much-needed study brings fact to this often overheated debate.

Review

“With knowledge there is victory and power. This book helps Americans learn the truth and discover how we are being manipulated by the mainstream media. It is hard to understate how brilliant and insightful Left Turn is. It is, I believe, one of the most important books ever written about American politics.” ―Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (R-Ga.)

“I'm no conservative, but I loved Left Turn. Tim Groseclose has written the best kind of book: one that is firmly anchored in rigorous academic research, but is still so much fun to read that it is hard to put down. Liberals will not like the conclusions of this book, which in my opinion, is all the more reason why they should want to read it.” ―Steven Levitt, Professor of Economics, University of Chicago, and co-author of Freakonomics.

“This book--an evolution from the pioneering article in the 2005 Quarterly Journal of Economics by Groseclose and Jeffrey Milyo--uses a clever statistical technique to construct an objective measure of conservative or liberal bias in news coverage. This method and those now adopted by other serious researchers show clearly that most U.S. news outlets lean left. Most frighteningly, we learn that the media bias actually affects the ways that people think and vote.” ―Robert Barro, Professor of Economics, Harvard University, and Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution.

“This book serves up the most convincing evidence for media bias I have seen, ever. Tim Groseclose is the leading academic scholar in the area, but this is a smartly-written book which every person can read for enlightenment and also for pleasure.” ―Tyler Cowen, Professor of Economics, George Mason University, and co-author of the internationally acclaimed economics blog, MarginalRevolution.com.

“In writing this book Professor Groseclose has done a great service for our country.” ―Congressman Allen West (R-Fla.), (Lt. Col. U.S. Army, ret.)

 1. What Are PQs and How Do They Reveal Media Bias?

“COME ON. POLITICAL science isn’t really a science,” said my friend Dawson Engler one day, trying to goad me.
Engler, one of the country’s premier computer scientists, is currently a professor at Stanford, where his specialty is operating systems. He has constructed his own operating system… twice.
He is the type of person who succeeds at nearly anything he tries. Born in Yuma, Arizona, during high school he placed second in the “Teenage Mr. Arizona” bodybuilding contest. After graduating from Arizona State University, he enrolled in the highly prestigious computer-science PhD program at MIT. It is unusual for a PhD student to publish a paper in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Yet Engler published eight while a doctoral student. Shortly after Stanford hired him, for a brief period he dated one of the actresses from Baywatch.
When Engler goaded me, both of us held positions at MIT, and he knew that my position was in the political-science department. At MIT, which is filled with “real” scientists and engineers, you often hear quips like Engler’s. So when he made it, I was prepared.
“Look,” I said. “We can both agree that if you can graph something, then you can describe it mathematically.”
“Yeah,” said Engler.
“And people, all the time, talk about politicians being left wing or right wing.”
“Okay,” said Engler.
“And so if a position is left wing or right wing, then you can graph it.… Which means you can describe it mathematically.… Which means it’s science.”
Engler smiled. I don’t think I really convinced him, but he didn’t goad me any further. At least in my mind, I’d won the day’s debate.
***
WITHIN POLITICAL SCIENCE a small industry exists to do the “science” that I described to Engler: to calculate precise, numerical measurements that describe the liberalness or conservativeness of politicians. In fact, at the time Engler made his quip, I was working on such a project. Indeed, the political quotients that I describe in this book are based on that research.
A person’s PQ is a number, generally between 0 and 100, that describes how liberal he or she is. I have created a Web site, www.timgroseclose.com/calculate-your-pq, which allows you to compute your own PQ. I have computed PQs for members of Congress by observing their record on roll call votes.
By answering the following ten questions,1 you can get a rough approximation of your PQ. When you answer the questions, try to put yourself in the shoes of the members of Congress and decide how you would have voted at the time that the politicians considered the measure. For instance, some people feel that the “Cash for Clunkers” program was not as successful as they hoped or thought it would be. Accordingly, when you answer the question related to this program—as well as when you answer the other questions—think about your opinion of the issue when it was considered in Congress, not necessarily about how you feel about it now.

One feature of the PQ is that it is constructed from roll call votes in Congress. This means that simply by noting how members of Congress voted on those roll calls, I can calculate their PQs, and you can compare your PQ to theirs. The following are the PQs of some well-known politicians.

An Insightful Look at Media Bias
By T. R. Kanavy
Note: Normally, when discussing a book with political implications, I attempt to present an opinion tailored to the sensitivities of members of each major political party concerning the work in question. In the case of Left Turn, I have forgone this formula due to the objective presentation of the book and the value it serves despite political affiliations.

The Author:

While reading this book, I experienced one constant mantra of thought: Dr. Groseclose is an unequivocal expert on the subject of media bias and relating politics. This book is not the construct of a sharp-tongued political analyst, but rather the work of an experienced and astute-observer utilizing a strong skillset in scientific reasoning and advanced calculation. When reading the author's biography, you will discover that Groseclose is a generally conservative professor of political science at UCLA and a visiting professor at several Ivy League universities. Those of us, who have been to university, know that such creatures (non-liberal university academics) are about as common as unicorns, leprechauns and a no-strings-attached weekend at a vacation timeshare. This facet alone might be reason enough to read Left Turn, but fortunately I can provide a few more motives.

Left Turn:

Left Turn, while written by an openly conservative author is riddled with examples, statistics, empirical data and careful-research in a valid effort to underscore the science of political science. Tim Groseclose, while an admitted conservative, maintains a sufficient measure of integrity throughout by frequently providing the arguments and opinion of liberals and democrats through the voice of his public detractors, liberal acquaintances and colleagues at UCLA- often granting concession and thoughtful rebuttal in such instances. This writing style struck a particular chord with me, as I myself value fairness, objectivity and a presentation of fact without malice. After all, many of our family, friends and loved ones possess varying opinions on inflammatory political matters and for a variety of different reasons. Where most political books today are dipped into a vat of satirical polish that seeks to demean and disparage the intended maligned party; Left Turn focuses on science and reason in an effort to enlighten the public to distortion through media bias. This is also the concept that makes the book a bit unsettling, perhaps more so for those on the left of the political aisle. Yet, I still encourage those on the left to read the book for reason best stated by Winston Churchill "The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is".

Conclusion:

In the end, Left Turn is an easy to read, expertly presented tool for removing a shroud of often unjust media influence that taints the information with which we are inundated. Despite the political party you claim, reading Left Turn will serve you a great measure of powerful insight- that is, essentially, the ability to thoughtfully recognize and interpret bias in the media. Ultimately, understanding media bias is essential to gaining transparency in politics, restoring integrity to journalism and promoting the true will of the governed- a sentiment that we all as Americans should desire.

A modern Voyage of Discovery
By Edmund Jimenez
*Left Turn*, by Tim Groseclose, is a kind of alien artifact because there is not a single hint of rancor, hostility or disrespect toward those with whom he, assuredly, politically disagrees. Instead, this book is a refreshment for the intellect.

At the outset, Dr. Groseclose declares his political disposition: he is a conservative. However, his private views are rendered irrelevant by his research effort of many years. Most of his colleagues are left of center, yet they all share a devotion to scientific accuracy and good faith.

As a political scientist and economist, Dr. Groseclose's academic accomplishments are impressive. His research is data-driven, brought to life by mathematics, and has been critically- and well-received by his peers.

His book outlines his research. Specifically, Dr. Groseclose explains how he arrives at a numeric value identifying an individual's or organization's position in the political spectrum. Remarkably, 1. the author is able to establish this identification over a range of time; not merely a point in time; and, 2. his research yields an absolute value of political identification, and not a relative one (e.g, Fox News relative to MSNBC). The implications and effects of these discoveries are then addressed by the author.

The organizations given scrutiny, unsurprisingly, comprise news media sources--both print and electronic. It will no doubt be irritating to liberals that Dr. Groseclose's research shows most media to be slanted to the left. And, of course, some conservatives will find validation in the author's conclusion, while judging it as ridiculously obvious. Such reactions would miss the point, I think, because what Dr. Groseclose has provided us, is a precise and objective tool for measuring the political bias of our news sources--whether they be left or right.

The reader becomes an observer of Dr. Groseclose's reflections, inquiries, doubts and research breakthroughs--virtually without recourse to mathematics, all by way of standard English. Along the way too, there are some startling, empirically based conclusions by the author which might nonplus conservatives and liberals.

In addition to identifying sources, the Notes section of the book is valuable because many entries amplify points in the main narrative, again using plain English. If the reader is interested in more detail, he can turn to the author's web site for companion papers which should be available by the time you read this.

Although the author writes extremely well, two points of fault deserve mention. I hope that I'm not being unduly harsh here:

1. Dr. Groseclose's use of indefinite pronouns (he, she) is inconsistent and distracting. His usage is an obvious political construct; it is clear that he, or his editor, succumbed to the pressure of feminist triviality. If memory serves, this particular form of anti-grammar originally struck the academic world hard during the mid-80s. It's a form of grammatical schizophrenia--underlain by the best of intentions, of course.

2. The final ten percent or so of the book is in need of an editor's touch. The writing in this part is a little clumsy and somewhat confusing. Nevertheless, with slight perseverance, the reader will be amply rewarded.

Please bear in mind that I read an advance copy. The released copy will no doubt be enjoyably refined.

During my reading, many questions occurred to me, which only increased my admiration for Dr. Groseclose's wonderful contribution to our understanding of political bias. I marvel at his analyses, insights and civility; his work may well become a new standard. I think that most readers of *Left Turn* will be similarly affected, and have a great deal of intellectual fun too.

Why Media Bias Matters
By Edward G. Keating
Building on a seminal Quarterly Journal of Economics article, in this book, Professor Tim Groseclose outlines considerable evidence for left-wing bias in the US media and, perhaps more importantly, argues that the bias tilts the US political system to the left.

When, in the middle of the last decade, Professor Groseclose and his co-author provided innovative quantification of leftward bias in the US media, the thesis was controversial, eliciting extensive (and often mean-spirited) reaction toward the authors. Since then, however, Groseclose's argument has become more widely accepted. Indeed, Hillary Clinton's campaign advisors noted (probably validly) extensive media bias toward now-President Obama in the 2008 primary campaign.

Indeed, "now-President" is the key phrase in the last sentence. Not only is the media biased, but that bias matters, i.e., has affected political outcomes in this country. The importance of media bias is the central thesis of "Left Turn" and the methodological enhancement relative to Professor Groseclose's earlier research. He introduces what he terms "the media lambda," a fancy way of suggesting the leftward pull or power of a biased media.

"Left Turn" is not an excessively equation-laden exegesis (though it has very extensive end notes and references). Instead, it is built on anecdotes of how the media matters, i.e., changes the nature of the policy debate and, ultimately, government policies. The heroine of the book is Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter Katherine Kersten, a rare conservative media member who broke the story of the "John Doe" litigation in which passengers on an airplane were sued by Muslim imams for reporting concerns about behavior the passengers perceived to be unusual and possibly threatening. As a result of Ms. Kersten's reporting, legislation was passed that disallowed litigation against witnesses who report suspicions to authorities.

While the book draws attention to Ms. Kersten's work, its broader point is that there are many more left-of-center journalists whose work is pulling political debate and governmental policymaking to the left than the few right-of-center journalists like Ms. Kersten.

Professor Groseclose's empirical estimates of media impact are sizable, perhaps implausibly so. Absent a biased media (and subject to lots of methodological assumptions), he predicts John McCain would have won the 2008 presidential by 56-42 percent. Except, one suspects, now-President Obama would not have been his party's nominee in such a world (at least according to then-candidate Clinton's embittered advisors).

The importance of this book notwithstanding, it's a very entertaining and quick read. For example, Professor Groseclose visited Washington County in southwest Utah. He identified Washington County as one of the country's most conservative counties of a reasonable size. He was looking for an "inverse newsroom," i.e., a county where conservatives are predominant the way liberals are in a modern newsroom. Though, in fact, he fails in that Washington County has far more Democratic voters proportionally than a typical newsroom has Republican voters. Professor Groseclose visited local denizens including Mike Empey who serves as the Democratic congressional representative Jim Matheson's local outreach coordinator. Mr. Empey's somewhat unenviable job is to try to convince Washington County residents that Representative Matheson is not as liberal as the national Democratic Party. It is interesting reading, both intrinsically with respect to what Mr. Empey deals with and when one reflects that he's living a politically inverted life to Ms. Kersten's. But each is ultimately a salmon, swimming valiantly against a current running strongly against them.

On some level, Professor Groseclose's thesis is unremarkable. People often speak of wanting to "make a difference" when they choose their lines of work. Professor Groseclose's argument is that liberal journalists make a difference, a very big difference. It'd be an unintended irony of "Left Turn" if the book ended up encouraging yet-more liberals to enter journalism (or, perhaps more likely, cause fewer liberals to quit journalism than would otherwise be the case) because this distinguished scholar has found their work has made a genuine difference in US political outcomes.

This is the first terrorism textbook based on sociological research. It adopts an innovative framework that draws together historical and modern, local and global, and social processes for a range of individuals, groups and societies. Individual behaviour and dispositions are embedded within these broader relationships and activities, allowing a more holistic account of terrorism to emerge. In addition, the shifting forms of identification and interwoven attitudes to political violence are discussed in order to explain the emergence, continuation, and end of ‘terrorist’ careers.

The book draws on examples from across the discursive spectrum, including religious, ‘red’ and ‘black’ racialist, nationalist, and trans-national. It also spans territories as diverse as Chechnya, Germany, Italy, Japan, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, South America, the UK, and the US.

A lesson in the possibilities of humor
By A. Reader
I stumbled across Helene Hanff in a place no devout reader should ever be--a video store. After watching '84 Charing Cross Road' I was enchanted with Miss Hanff's wit and humor, and needed more. After an arduous search, I found a used copy of 'Underfoot...' and read it in less than 2 days. I even found myself laughing aloud at parts, which greatly disturbed the people sitting next to me. Hanff's ability to laugh at herself and to extract the humor from any situation is addictive. The book begins with a note to the reader: 'Each year, hundreds of stagestruck kids arrive in New York determined to crash the theatre, firmly convinced they're destined to be famous Broadway stars or playwrights. One in a thousand turns out to be Noel Coward. This book is about life among the other 999. By one of them.' From there, Miss Hanff takes the reader on a tour of her adventures and experiences as a struggling playwright in an honest and spirited manner. I was left wishing that my life was as unpredictable and ironic as Miss Hanff's struggle to live her dreams.

Broadway misadventures
By R. Rowan
Helene Hanff published this, her first book, in 1961. She shares stories from her years as a struggling playwright in New York City; her good friend Maxine was a struggling actress. Practically penniless, they still managed to see first-run shows and movies regularly. How they did it is one of many memorable and funny tales.
I couldn't help laughing at the merry-go-round of a Broadway agent shopping a play all over town. Ms. Hanff tells how 'Oklahoma!' was named (she was there). One of her many jobs involved speed-reading long novels; her take on Tolkein is slightly different than Peter Jackson's.
I echo a previous reviewer's thought: this book would make a terrific film. 'Underfoot in Show Business' is a gem, a memoir full of magic and wit. Highly recommended.

Truly, this is the funniest book you'll ever read.
By Anthony Kline
I once had to read a bit of this book out to some strangers on a plane who wanted to know why I was laughing out loud and then we had champagne and it was a great flight and Miss Hanff had even more fans. The tears were running down our faces. [ For those of you who have read it already it was the bit about the funeral parlour].
This book, like all of Miss Hanff's works, makes you feel great to be alive.
I've come to love my native city more and more by seeing it through Miss Hanff's eyes.

I am awaken
By Kayzie Zepeda
The words are too precious and sacred to be read silently and kept in your head. Each poem is meant for you to read to someone special in your life, or meant to be read to you by someone you have loved or have loved you or hurt you. The words are a beautiful lullaby, softly spoken, in whispers, but with burning emotions. The words are a graceful song, but surely not to put you to sleep. Instead, they are words that awaken your soul, heals and hammers your heart. Regardless if they are calm or painful, the words remind you that you are alive and able to feel all these emotions. They remind you to stay awake for love.

Life After Death: The Burden of Proof, by Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra has touched millions of readers by demystifying our deepest spiritual concerns while retaining their poetry and wonder. Now he turns to the most profound mystery: What happens after we die? Is this one question we were not meant to answer, a riddle whose solution the universe keeps to itself? Chopra tells us there is abundant evidence that “the world beyond” is not separated from this world by an impassable wall; in fact, a single reality embraces all worlds, all times and places. At the end of our lives we “cross over” into a new phase of the same soul journey we are on right this minute.

In Life After Death, Chopra draws on cutting-edge scientific discoveries and the great wisdom traditions to provide a map of the afterlife. It’s a fascinating journey into many levels of consciousness. But far more important is his urgent message: Who you meet in the afterlife and what you experience there reflect your present beliefs, expectations, and level of awareness. In the here and now you can shape what happens after you die.

By bringing the afterlife into the present moment, Life After Death opens up an immense new area of creativity. Ultimately there is no division between life and death—there is only one continuous creative project. Chopra invites us to become cocreators in this subtle realm, and as we come to understand the one reality, we shed our irrational fears and step into a numinous sense of wonder and personal power.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In India death is perceived very differently than in the West, "as a brief stopping point on an endless soul journey," says Chopra in this introduction to life beyond bodily existence. Chopra, a medical doctor and world leader in mind-body medicine as well as author of more than 45 books, now ventures to answer: what happens after we die? For Chopra, death deserves to be called miraculous, a "doorway to a far more important event—the beginning of the afterlife" and a mode of being that "can be as creative as living." Chopra effectively uses the classic Vedanta story of Savitri—a woman who comes home to find death, Lord Yama, waiting to take her husband, and who seeks the monk Ramana's advice to outwit death—to frame each chapter. Chopra grounds each topic in the long arc of this singular story, which is the perfect springboard for Chopra to introduce concepts such as Akasha (the highest stage a soul can attain) and Eternity within the Indian tradition (where we are beyond death, life, maleness, femaleness, and the experience of time). Chopra presents a fascinating account of life after death for Westerners that will certainly please his avid fans and draw in new readers as well. (Nov.)

“A penetrating and insightful investigation into the greatest mystery of existence. This is an important book because only by facing death will we come to a deeper realization of who we are.” —Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now

“If I had any doubts about the afterlife, I don’t have them anymore. Deepak Chopra has cast his inimitable light on the darkened corners of death. I think this is his greatest contribution yet.” —Marianne Williamson, author of The Gift of Change

“Deepak Chopra . . . takes us to the edge of our own deepest inner truth about life after death by sharing with us his vision and his wisdom, which, as always, is breathtaking, healing, and soul-opening.” —Neale Donald Walsch, author of Home with God: In a Life That Never Ends

“Deepak Chopra has written a masterpiece that is long overdue in our spiritual culture. Life After Death: The Burden of Proof is a bold and comforting guide into the afterlife.” —Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts

“By marrying science and wisdom in Life After Death, Chopra builds his case for an afterlife in which our most essential self, the seer that observes our experiences in this temporary home that we call the self, uses the end of this lifetime to pass over into the next. This is an intellectual and spiritual tour de force.” —Professor Robert Thurman, Columbia University, author of Infinite Life and The Tibetan Book of the Dead

Excellent book from a spiritual and scientific perspective
By Brian Smith
If you've known me for any length of time, you probably know I am obsessed with the topic of life after death. It's probably the result of being told for the first 18 years of my life that this life really didn't matter except as the test for whether you go to heaven or hell. Whatever, the reason, I still have this fascination with peeking behind the veil and seeing what's on the other side. I don't know how many books I've read on near death experiences and life after death. But, of all the books I have read, I think Deepak Chopra's "Life After Death, the Burden of Proof" is probably my favorite.

The book doesn't try to prove life after death merely by talking about NDEs. It's really more about cosmology and the nature of reality than it is about trying to track the soul after we die. Chopra draws deeply from an ancient Indian tradition called "Vedanta". I found it fascinating that throughout the book, he relates recent scientific discoveries to ancient religious traditions. The book looks at at death and the universe completely opposite from the way Christianity and many religions view death and the way modern scientists view the material universe. Death is seen as a miracle, similar to the miracle of birth. I was taught that death entered the world through sin and is the enemy. Something to fear. The Devil and Death are the enemy and God rescues us. Chopra says death is a miracle that:

* Replaces time with timelessness
* Stretches the boundaries of space to infinity
* Reveals the source of life
* Brings a new way of knowing that lies beyond the five senses
* Reveals the underlying intelligence that organizes and sustains creation (what most of us would call God)

Rather than seeing the Universe as something that just "happened", the book sees the material world as having arisen from Consciousness. Science has been trying to figure out what consciousness is and how it has arisen from a Big Bang of inanimate material. That is once science figure out that it hasn't just always been here. Chopra's approach, and what he argues science is uncovering, is that the material world has actually arisen from Consciousness. It's not the "spiritual" world that is unreal, it's the material world that is the illusion. or the projection. The way he weaves scientific discovery with the ancient traditions of the Indian rishis is very interesting. It reminds me of an illustration I saw presented by a theologian many years ago. Scientists arrive at the top of the mountain to discover a theologian sitting there. The theologian looks up and says "What took you so long?" Religion has taught us the Universe wasn't always here. Religion has taught us that some Intelligence created the material world. Religion has taught us there is design and purpose for what we see. Religion has taught us that we are more than our bodies (our brains).

The afterlife begins to make sense when you take the approach that consciousness is not in the brain. But, the brain is more like a receiver of consciousness. This is a model being investigated by some neuroscientists. Science cannot tell us how the brain works. We can see it working, different parts lighting up as we think or dream. But, we are obviously more than just our brains. For example, while many people believe that our brains produce our thoughts, thoughts actually can change brain chemistry. Since drugs are somewhat effective in treating depression one could say changing one's brain chemistry can change one's thoughts. However, talk therapy works as well and can produce changes in brain chemistry. Meditation can produce changes in brain chemistry. It's definitely not a one way street. While depression can be caused by chemical imbalances, a depressing event can lead to those chemical imbalances. So, our thoughts are clearly not only produced by our brain chemistry. Something, outside of our brain, is the observer, the creator.

The book does touch on Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and OOBEs (Out Of Body Experiences). It also talks about different levels of reality from the physical all the way up to the ultimate level (called the Akashic field in this book). The heavens and hells experienced by people who have had NDEs are temporary stops along the way (as many who have had NDEs have reported). They are largely created by the mind and the expectation of the person dying. Of course, scientists have said this all along- they're purely subjective experiences and do not reflect reality. But, this brings us to the question as to what the nature of reality is. If you're in a dream and you can't wake up, that is reality to you. We call this reality because it's a shared experience. But, reality is whatever your senses tell you it is. None of us experiences reality directly (in this body anyway). How much do our minds create "reality"?

At the point of death, our ties to the physical world fall away and we begin to experience more directly the other two realms (the subtle world the the world of pure consciousness). Chopra talks about how we can begin to shift our focus on these realms of reality before we die.

In the second part of the book, Chopra talks about the burden of proof. He addresses the following five questions:

* Is Akasha real (the realm of pure consciousness, the Void from which all creation flows)?
* Does the mind extend beyond the brain?
* Is the universe aware?
* Does consciousness have a basis outside of time and space?
* Can our beliefs shape reality?

If we can answer all of these questions in the affirmative, it's not so hard to believe that we survive the death of our bodies (really the death of our brains since that is where the mind is said to reside). Chopra links the question about Akasha to what scientists are discovering about the ultimate nature of the universe. He gets into some pretty complex physics that I have to confess I don't really understand. But, what is interesting is that the word Akasha has an English equivalent- ether. Up until the late 1800s scientists believed there was no "void" in space but everything was transmitted through the ether. Physicists more recently have gone back to a model that says space is full of activity in the form of invisible fluctuations in the quantum field. Physicists have come up with a Zero Point Field which contains not just what we see in the universe but everything that could possibly exists. This "field of fields", this seething exchange of energy is what everything that exists pops into and out of existence. The Zero Point field has been calculated to contain 10 to the 40th power more energy than the visible universe. This sounds a lot like what religion has been telling us that the unseen is incredibly more powerful than the seen.

That last paragraph may have been over your head (it's over mine). Chopra goes on and gives some analogies that are very helpful. Basically what he is positing it that our physical world is projected from a nonmaterial source. The invisible world comes first. And, reality increases the closer one gets to the source. As we die, we do not blink out of existence. We move from the projected to the real.

The next chapters go on to address the other questions asked above. Chopra concludes with a poem by Rabgindranath Tagore. He only gives part of it. But, I've looked up the whole thing. Some of the words in this translation are slightly different than Chopra presented them. I like this one better. I've been reflecting on this for the last few days and it has brought me comfort. I fear death because it's a journey into the unknown. But, this poem relates death to birth.

I was not aware of the moment
when I first crossed the threshold of this life.

What was the power that made me open out into this vast mystery
like a bud in the forest at midnight!

When in the morning I looked upon the light
I felt in a moment that I was no stranger in this world,
that the inscrutable without name and form
had taken me in its arms in the form of my own mother.

Even so, in death the same unknown will appear as ever known to me.
And because I love this life,
I know I shall love death as well.

The child cries out
when from the right breast the mother takes it away,
in the very next moment to find in the left one its consolation.

Exceptionally Rewarding Discussion on the Afterlife *
By TW
Chopra offers a compelling book complete with two distinct sections; Life After Death, and The Burden of Proof. The first half deals with Chopra's feelings regarding the spiritual afterlife based on his research of both western and eastern religions. The second section changes gears entirely with a scientific and logical analysis of what occurs after the physical body expires. The two sections are quite dissimilar and my positive rating is only geared toward the second segment.

The Life After Death section of the book reads like a sermon. It would be inappropriate to suggest the thoughts of a world renown thinker such as Chopra do not have value; however, this section spoke of the afterlife with a precision Chopra can not possibly know, and thus his beliefs were meshed with unsubstantiated facts which is disappointing.

The second half of the book, The Burden of Proof, is an absolute success and fully refreshing in its approach. Chopra immediately deals with the inability of science to properly define certain aspects in life. Chopra explains, "If one could calculate every vibration of a violinist's bow while playing a Beethoven sonata, that wouldn't explain music or its beauty" and thus along the same line of thinking, science may indeed one day be able to explain all physical reality, yet science may never be able to fully explain the emotion we derive from that very reality.

The most invigorating element of this section was Chopra's assessment of science and energy. Humans consume water and air, thus the atoms that comprise these elements become the atoms that make up the physical components of a human, including the brain. Therefore, those very atoms eventually become part of what gives us life, but from a purely scientific point of view, they are still the same physical atoms. Chopra asserts it is thus quite possible that the very life breathed into atoms during that change might not be from the physical, but from a field that drives life and the mental phenomena that is beyond the physical nature of atoms.

As much as a radio is merely a transmitter of music, a brain could simply be a transmitter of human conciseness (thoughts, memory and beliefs). Chopra acknowledges that it is possible this consciousness could in fact be physical and science has just not yet discovered how to see or measure such an element. This reads not as an admission but as a statement that in the very least, the current base of knowledge surrounding the physical elements of life and death are positively limited and offer no explanation where Chopra offers possibility.

Despite the profound content, Chopra displays some weakness when confusing some of his conclusions with logical fallacy, such as cherry picking results, particularly pertaining to his explanation of prayers and other unexplained phenomena. Despite this short coming, the abundance of thought provoking material easily over compensates and the material can be valued by merely passing over these issues.

Most of Chopra's thoughts are extremely reflective and will require a basic scientific understanding of terms. Perhaps the biggest appeal is that Chopra presents a study of the afterlife that melds both science and religion together in a manner that would be acceptable to each. I highly recommend this book (the second half specifically) to all critical thinkers especially those with conflicting views. At worst, Chopra will not leave you disappointed; at best, Chopra will help shape your expectation of life after death.

* Title Refers specifically to Second Half of the Book - the Burden of Proof - as I found the first section unrewarding.

I'm Dying to Know the Answer
By Elliot Malach
The book attempts to show different perspectives on whether or not there is life after death. It covers everything from death to consciousness to reincarnation and Karma.

The best part of the book was the stories. The Indian tale of Sativri, who doesn't want Yama (death) to take her husband, is an underlying theme as Deepak tells it in segments throughout the book. Mellen-Thomas Benedict's hour and a half near-death experience was another highlight. His journey to the other side was a very unique experience, even among NDE's. Another story on reincarnation told of a boy who was obsessed with fighter planes from WWII. He told his parents he died in Iwo Jima, giving them names and dates, which were all corroborated.

The book offers great insights and perspectives from both the scientific and spiritual views, and from East and West philosophies. It helps that Deepak knows the Indian culture. One viewpoint I have never heard before was that when you call on your memory, you are actually accessing the Akashic records.

Definitely worth reading.
