Enjoyable and silly romp through technology and survival on our favorite dino world. No way its as easy as to manage ones lot in life with technology, but who cares? It’s fun and readable.
Good bits? I like the usual celebration of technology, hard work and engineering. Character names are lifted wholesale as usual from pop culture. Originally I hated this in Hechtl’s work. Now I enjoy it and it certainly helps to paint mind pictures quickly.
As an antipodean myself, I found the usual portrayal of Australia and New Zealand amusing. Of course those of us who know both the US and ‘Down Below’ always get a laugh given the US is so old fashioned and backwards in many ways compare to Australasia, but thank you Paul Hogan for that lasting impression you’ve given the world!
Colonel Dunn and the African colony? I’ve met quite a few Colonel Dunn’ in person in the US and suspect Hechtl might have as well – the character is spot on. No wonder the US is slipping behind the rest of the western, English speaking world so quickly! Not that you would know it from the USs coverage of itself and the world - you guys really do need to travel more!
For the African/Haitian colony – well I’ve worked for years in development work in Africa and once again Hechtl was spot on in attitudes and justification for appalling behaviors. My wife also like Hechtl’s books and she keep saying “Oh my God! He must have worked with the same people that we did!” Suspect he didn’t, but well done Mt Hechtl for having the courage to write on an attitude and mindset that is all too common in certain parts of the world.
Bad bits? Red haired women in Hechtl’s books again as usual. Lesbians as usual. Dominatrix activity? As usual. The sex and S&M references? As usual. Just boring. It’s a pattern in Hechtl’s books that is becoming a bit tiring. Just not interested. It doesn't flesh out characters, it smacks more of obsessions.
Overall? Four stars. Fun, enjoyable but just didn’t all tie up in some way - Hechtl is usually better than this. The lack of development of the Alaskan and Crash Town folks was a bit disappointing. Having introduced them they deserved more.
Good series though and a fun but not quite up to Hechtl’s usual. But yeah, I will definitely be buying the next one.

Good continuation of the story!

This book brings in much more of the bootstrap colony world. We get to see two new groups in detail and then continue on with the stories of Mitch and the crew. Very good read over all. There are a few typo's in the book but that is to be expected with self published works. Keep up the good work Mr. Hechtl!

Good continuation of book 1

Book 2 picks up with the Camp Colony expanding having taken in a couple of hundred lost and overwhelmed people. We see some interpersonal issues start to crop up and when the Colony finds other villages on their continent, we get more conflict and politics rears its ugly head when some place their dominance over the well being of the group.
We get a bit more of the SCI-FI aspect of the situation which is good. Some interesting twists when children are born and how/why things are happening.
I read the book pretty much non-stop as it was engaging. I liked the background stories but they were stories of new people coming into the storyline and not of folks that were introduced in book 1. I would still like to see some bios or profiles, given the wide selection of people. It would have been interesting to see what the determining factors were in who was chosen. Some of that was discussed but other than Mitch Chambers, it was unclear to me on the rest.
Grammar errors were reduced but are still there. I hope to see a third book delving into the mysteries of the aliens.
one thing that did strike me as odd. We have 10000 humans translocated to the new planet. In the first year, they are down to about 3300 or so. Yet, with this small population, the base camp is doing some amazing things that really don't make a lot of sense given limited manpower (unless the robots he has are doing more work than in implied in the book) and the sheer number of projects that do not relate to survival does not jive well with me. Still, I enjoyed the book and hope to see a third.
