Great infomercial stories, lacking marketing secrets

This book was a let down. I feel like it is best suited as an introduction to direct response marketing.

The marketing lessons are really surface level; explaining USP'S and 'show the product in action' kinda stuff. Cesari's claim to fame was infomercials. I do believe that the principles of successful infomercial spots can be transferred to media like youtube and facebook. This book just doesn't delve into the nitty gritty like I was expecting.

Not doubting the authors' expertise. This book is just more of a marketing memoir. Detailed stories of Billie Mays with OxiClean and George Foreman with the grills. Reminds me of Joe Sugarman's Marketing Secrets of a Mail Order Maverick.

This book is highly recommended for anyone who is interested in direct marketing. Rick Cesario provides an honest and informative approach to the ins and outs of creating a persuasive marketing campaign that works. It is written in a style that makes it very hard to put down. One of the best business books I’ve read in while – a must for entrepreneurs.

Devoured this in one day. An awesome inside look at at an extremely lucrative method (direct response) of marketing. It;s mainly about infomercials, but don;t let that turn you off. The information contained in this book will help with any marketing media you choose.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL.

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

Mike has four children: Kathleen teaches college mathematics; Michael III teaches college mathematics and is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan works in publishing; and Colleen teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

Please read this review!!!!

1)Michael Sullivan (Sr.) is one of the four or five best writers
of math textbooks on today's scene. If you can find a textbook written by him that fits whatever current math course you are in
buy the book sight unseen. You will be more than happy that you
did.
2)As far as this book is concerned, I used it from chapter 1 to the end (every section of every chapter) and did every problem in
the book. I did not have an instructor and I was not enrolled in a course. I used the book to brush up for calculus after being out of school for 20 years.
3)This book is great for a course in college algebra, trigonometry, or precalculus. It serves all three purposes. I know this because after I finished the text and began studying
calculus, on my own, I was really able to appreciate how well
Sullivan's book prepared me for calculus.
4)The explanations of each concept are clear, not more rigorous
than is appropriate for a student at the level of the textbook,
but certainly not dumbed down.
5)The problems and questions are well written, comprehensive, and
most importantly, instructive. I found that the best question I
could ask myself about every problem in the book was "now what is
Sullivan trying to get me to see by doing this problem or answering this question". I mention this because this is what Sullivan is really good at; he doesn't spoon feed you.
6)Look, we all want essentially the same things from a textbook.
We want clearly written, well illustrated worked out problems
that allow us to grasp the concept in question so that we can use
it to solve problems and answer conceptual questions. With Sullivan, you get this in great measure.
This is a wonderful textbook for both sudents and teachers. It is
a great book to learn from and a great book to learn to teach from.

Very Good Precalculus Reference

With the sixth edition of this textbook, Sullivan has made significant strides since the fifth edition of the College Algebra portion. The interval notations used to indicate the regions where the value of a function is increasing or decreasing is so much more clear and concise. In contrast to the former use of frequently displaying number lines with pluses and minuses underneath, in which the readings of them were perhaps more of an exercise for the eyes than for the mind, Sullivan revised this mess using parentheses and brackets to indicate test intervals.
As a teacher, I say that this is not the most user-friendly book for an instructor who teaches one hour college algebra classes three times a week. Oftentimes, for me to quickly get the fundamentals across, I have to paraphrase what Sullivan lays out in many of the sections. The language is often too theoretical for several of my students (Many are in non-technical majors but have to complete college algebra as a last mathematics course requirement), and I have to put the symbolic logic sequences into terms that can cross over to applied mathematics. This is not meant to be a criticism, however.
Perhaps the main weaknesses lie in the shortcomings of applied problems, particularly in the sections concerning maxima and minima, and especially in the inequality segments. On a very positive note, however, I will grant that the sixth chapter, which involves logarithms and exponents is quite fascinating. For instance, you have applied problems involving the amount of interest that can be gained after so many years if, say, [money amount]is deposited into an account and accumulates interest at 6% compounded quarterly. Physics problems are also well presented. One interesting tidbit: if you wondered how long it would take for a 300-degree dish to cool down to 100 degrees in an environment that is at room temperature, the formula that can be used, namely Newton's Law of Cooling, is provided. As another example: suppose that a dead animal was discovered in a barn at midnight and its temperature was 80�F� ; the temperature of the barn is kept constant at 60�F; two hours later the temperature of the corpse dropped to 75�F; find the time of death. The formula for this type of problem is also shown.
As added kudos, I especially like the intermittent TI-83 calculator tips. The use of technology in mathematics classes is notably increasing in the community colleges. All in all, this is a finer, more updated version, and it is especially recommended for those who want to go beyond the call of duty and discover new ways of applying mathematics to their daily lives.

Access codes by this publisher is a scam

I bought this book for a class that required the book and the access code for the online class. I bought it new thinking
that the access code would be valid. Unfortunately the access code did not work. After waiting for an hour to speak with
Pearson's representative, he double checked the code, told me it was a valid code, we spent another 25 minutes going over everything on the phone and
then he said he was going to send me an email with instructions on how to replace the code. I asked him to make sure if the new code was going to work and he said yes. Well, the email he sent me was to say that Pearson does not replace access code when the book is purchased outside
the university or college that the book is intended for. In other words, they don't replace codes for books purchased through Amazon.
All that time wasted and being duped by this agent by the fake name of "Dave" who is really answering the phone from India.
Pearson is doing a scam with these access codes and probably the universities are in cahoots with them. The only trustworthy and honorable company here is Amazon who refunded the money right away. I'm sorry to say but don't buy this book from Amazon, you might run into the same problem, even though it's not their fault.

Great booklet!

This is a fantastic and informative book giving some very enjoyable observations on the Tabernacle. Without any waffling or attempts to overthrow the AV with so called original languages or scholarly opinions. Rather it explains the symbolism of the Tabernacle correctly by comparing scripture with scripture. A thrilling book which builds faith in God and his word.

Dr Ruckman wont waste your time with " a better translation should have been" or any such statements. You will be learning from the Preface. My brother's material will keep you craving for more of the Word. ( i am referring to the King James Bible ). If you love the meat of the Word then get any thing written by my brother. If you want someone who DONT compromise God's Word then get Ruckman material. He makes NO apologies to anyone who messes with God's Word. He is God's watchman in this end time. Get the book because you will like it. I have almost ( not everything yet ) everything he wrote in print. Thank you my brother for NOT compromising when it was the easy thing to do.

This was a very enjoyable book. For those who like military science fiction with a bit of space opera thrown in, this book will be tailor made for you. If you like David Weber's Honor Harrington series, you will like this book (but more on that later).

The story is about a fairly junior space fighter pilot and her rise through the ranks during her space-nation's long war with marauding space barbarians (who it turns out are really . What makes the story interesting is that the main character is a member of a space nation that is 98% women. They are a female dominated culture because they were forced to settle their world in a highly radioactive nebula with the consequence that in order to survive they had to manipulate the genetic code. This genetic manipulation enabled the colonists to survive but with the side effect that live births of males became rare. This is a good "hook" for the story and the author tells it well. The story moves briskly, the characters are well developed, and the space combat believable and interesting.

Now the book does have a couple of problems:

-- The first "problem" is the obvious derivative nature of the plot/story. I said that if one likes the Honor Harrington series one would like this book. That's because much of the story in this book is a clone of several Honor Harrington books. An isolated space nation is discovered by a larger empire, a space nation with a culture completely foreign to the space empire, and a space nation whose alliance with that empire contributes more than one would think given the small space nation's size. It's essentially the planet "Grayson" that is featured in most Honor Harrington books (the ideas I mentioned are not by any means the only similarities). Now this is only a "problem" in the sense that it is there. I didn't find it too troubling, it's far from being plagiarism, but purists out there might react differently. As it is, the high quality of the story telling makes made it easy for me to ignore this issue.

-- The second problem I had was the absence of sex. The issue is this: we have a society with 98% women, with the men hidden away and basically used a sperm donors, yet there is never any mention or even hint of how the women in this culture handle sex and romantic relationships. Do they have sex with one another? No indication they do. Do they fall in love with one another? No hint. There would have to be some kind of cultural adjustment...but there is no mention of it. Unless. Unless the culture's skilled geneticists bred out sexual desire. But there is no indication of that either, especially since the main character begins to be attracted to a male from a foreign space empire. Now I do not want soft porn in my reading. However, I found the believability of the entire book placed into question by the complete absence of any discussion of how this culture handles sex.

Now those two "problems" are minor given the overall good story telling in the book. Overall, I enjoyed the book very much and I intend to buy the sequel.

Amazing piece of work

A lengthy novel that is suddenly over in no time all. This guy can write, and write well. This is like an Honor Harington story when it was done right, unfortunately HH has gone almost completely off the rails. Classic space naval battles done brilliantly. This novel is tight, little excess, and opens up a vast universe of possibilities. At the end, I was staggered by how many major plot lines are open to explore. This book kept its secrets close to its vest, but I never felt like I was being toyed with. It just wasn't the right time to go there yet. I still cant get over how much ground it covered, but I only feel like it covered a quarter of the story.

This will become a classic of space opera in the future.

Looking forward to more, much more.

Best Space Opera Ever

I have enjoyed watching star blazers as a child and later reliving the experience when it was release on dvd.
While the many years have turned there have been few true space opera of battles and fights between the forces of good and evil.
Firestar starts very somewhat moderately paced space action that really draws you into the story. While Star Blazers is somewhat dated today, Firestar offers a more modern story to replace it with greater depth. There is far more than just this story as the are many others offered by the author on another website. I would say that the bruce has captured most of the original feeling of really true space opera.

Please feel free to sit back and enjoy the Corey and her spectacular rise to an Admiral on the Families Navy.
