A wave of emotions

An Incident of Renewed Faith is a short narrative that will create an emotional connection with anyone. It is an event that I am sure many people have had to experience. It starts off with author Peter Nez creating an uneasy feeling of being in the court house waiting to face the cop and judge about a ticket he got. He describes all the other people waiting in the same hall with as “shuffling anxiously back and forth fumbling papers in their hands” which shows how anxious everyone, including him, about what their outcomes will be. As time goes by, Peter begins the think that the cop is not going to show, giving him hope that his case will be dropped and be a free man. He even texts his wife with some confidence about his thoughts! But soon the cop that gave him the ticket arrives. This cop’s persona was “radiant”, “an every-day-man kind of glow,” who moved “gradually as if the earth had to come to him.” A few minutes go by and as the court room doors open and as Peter walks into the room, him and “his guy” make eye contact. Through this eye contact, there is an emotional moment which leads to them exchanging a few words before they sit down. The judge comes in and the first person called to the stand and as the case goes on, Peter begins to feel empathy for cops for the people and situations they have to deal with on a daily basis, “ a wretched mob of unappreciation.” After continuous eye contact with his cop, peter gave him a silent apology to show him there is a mutual understanding. Peter is to the stand next, and when he gets to the stand, there is silence, waiting for the cop to pull out his notes from the case. A few moments go by, and the cop announces to the judge that he as forgotten his notes and cannot proceed with the case. Peter looked at the cop and received the “inviting smile that said everything”. He was free to go. When he leaves the building he describes everything as “beautiful” and you can feel how truly happy he was. A moment that we can all relate to. Relief and happiness.

A Great Read

An Incident of Renewed Faith is an excellent short story that is easily relatable to and hooks the reader’s attention. Peter Nez does an exceptional job by welcoming the reader into the story with an incident most people are familiar with. At the beginning, the reader is emotional drawn to Peter and his protest. Since most people have experienced this, we are instantly on Peter’s side, and hope that that the officer does not show, but suddenly does with minutes to spare. Nez painted a picture of hopelessness once the officer had shown. In perfect harmony with reality, he sends his wife a text message as we all would do in his situation. Despite his sense of despair, hope and faith are miraculously reintroduced when the officer stated, “You never know what could happen.” During the first case, a bond begins to form between Peter and the officer through exchanges of silent interactions. Nez gives great detail about the interactions. The judge had finally called the next case. It happened to be Peter’s. Nez provides great details to the reader regarding the officer’s contradictory and uncharacteristic look. At this point, Peter’s faith is renewed at the dismissal of this case. The great drama in the book causes the reader to almost forget that he/she is reading because of specific details and particular words that drag the reader in. The words and details used help set the scene and cause the reader to feel the emotions Peter had felt throughout the book. For example, Nez used precise words such as “numb” and “uselessness” to describe his hopelessness state. The descriptive words throughout the book express a lot of emotion and images. In addition, the specific details throughout the book paint the reader with vivid images on what he had experienced at a certain moment. For example, Nez painted a concise image of the hallway scene; where many people had flooded the hallway, anxiously moving back and forth, shuffling papers, and that most of the people sat on long wooden benches against the walls.

“An Incident of Renewed Faith” is a great story that inspires us to have faith in life and humanity. This is the author’s real story - a situation that some of us used to meet in our daily life - attending a traffic court. The author is successful in showing the readers his story rather than telling it. Everything is described in details that makes the story clear and gives the readers a chance to live in the author’s story. We can see what the author has seen and feel what he has felt. Indeed, in “An Incident of Renewed Faith,” when the author describes the scene of the court hallway and the activities of people around him, readers can easily visualize the court hallway with people who are “shuffling anxiously back and forth, fumbling paper in their hands, eyeing nobody round them.” Also, the readers can feel how cold the hallway is and how anxious the people who “are attempting to fight the law” are. Or when he describes the appearance of his citing officer, the readers can picture his guy. We can feel how warm, popular, friendly and nice his guy is. Another great thing about the narrative is the plot. The plot is full of surprises that catch the readers' attention till the end of the story. At first, the author believed he could get off the hook when the office hadn’t showed till 7:55; however, at the last minutes his guy came. The second time the readers feel surprised is when the author was free to go at the end of the story. We thought that he would have to pay the fine but an unbelievable thing happened - the officer didn't have his necessary notes with him, so he had to file a dismissal. One more interesting thing about the story is the non-spoken communion between the author and his officer. Although they didn't say a word during the court, their looks to each other told them everything. They became understood each other, empathized and shared "the same feelings about life, about dignity, about right and wrong." What the officer did inspired the author's best and made him want to "do some right in a world gone wrong" and also refreshed the author's positive thoughts about life and humanity. The readers also feel inspired when the story ends. Through his narrative, the author is successful in sending the readers a beautiful message - there are always good people out there and there's always hope in bad situations if you have faith. I will recommend this narrative to others.

Good for basic studying for the test and cramming.

I used this guide to cram for the DANTES Technical Writing test. Most of the material on the test was covered in this booklet in one form or another and I had no problem passing the test. However I was not required to take the essay part of the test which it does not cover to much of.

About the Author
Walter Aerts is Professor of Accountancy and Head of Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is a member of the IFRS committee of the Belgian Accounting Standards Board and has taught in several countries in Europe and East Asia. Peter Walton is professor of accounting at the University of Geneva and visiting professor at the University of Paris Dauphine. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and worked for multinational companies before becoming an academic.

A Frenchman explaining Zen and Japanese gardens, translated into English, makes for an international headache. Some good insights, yes. A lot of pseudo-Zen philosophical nonsense, yes. Best read with a glass of wine (French) in hand.
