I have bought numerous books on color theory and this book is the best. It's not a scholarly epistle but very practical and shows great knowledge. I am about halfway through the series of exercises and have learned a great deal. I have been painting for many years and have new insight.

About the Author

Felix Hufeld is President of the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) and member of the Supervisory Board of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) for the banks of the Eurozone. Previously he was Chief Executive Director Insurance Supervision at BaFin. He was also Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and member of the Management Board of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA). Previously he was Partner at Westlake Partners. From 2001 to 2010 he served as Chief Executive Officer of Marsh Germany, Austria, and Northern Europe of Marsh & Mclennan Companies Inc. Prior to this he worked for Dresdner Bank as their Global Head Group Corporate Development, and for The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He studied Law in Freiburg and received a Master in Public Administration at Harvard University.

Ralph S. J. Koijen is a Professor of Finance at London Business School. His areas of expertise are health and insurance markets, investments, and financial econometrics. He is also a Research Fellow of the CEPR and Netspar. Before joining London Business School, he was visiting Assistant Professor of Finance at New York University's Stern School of Business, and an Assistant and Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Professor Koijen's research has been published in leading journals, such as Econometrica, the American Economic Review, The Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Journal of Financial Economics. He has received various awards for his work including the Richard A. Crowell Memorial Prize, the Roger F. Murray Prize, Swiss Finance Institute Outstanding Paper Award, the Glucksman Institute Research Prize, and the Amundi-Smith Breeden Distinguished Paper Prize.

Christian Thimann is AXA's Group Head of Regulation, Sustainability and Insurance Foresight, based in Paris. From 2014-16 he has been on the Board of Directors of AXA Investment Managers and Alliance Bernstein Investment Managers, New York. He is also an External Member of the French Council of Economic Advisors and an Affiliated Professor at the Paris School of Economics. Previously Dr Thimann held senior positions at the European Central Bank (ECB), including Director General and Advisor to the President from 2008 to 2013. He also served as an Economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC. Dr Thimann holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics, and a PhD from Ludwig-Maximilians Universit�t M�nchen.

Perhaps the Greatest Leader of the 20th Century

I have always been a fan of Sir Winston Churchill who I consider to have been perhaps the greatest leader of the 20th century. His life from his privileged childhood and his tortured relationship with his father to his exile from government following WWI and his ultimate return as Prime Minister is a fascinating story. It is not an understatement to say that his leadership may well have saved western civilization from the grip of the Nazis.

I didn't take notes as I listened, but apparently Mr. Dobbs in his August 09 review paid rapt attention to the lessons for future CEO's & businessman. I couldn't hope to duplicate that. I'm not a CEO or business person but that did not diminish in any way my enjoyment of a very good biography. Its lessons for leadership are very well integrated into Churchill's life history. He is the most influential, greatest, western individual of the 20th century. A driving force, always desirous to be in on the action, his was an ego-driven, "look at me" attitude. He not only wrote history, he made it. He was a battle tested veteran of many wars but his most important tool was words. He wielded the English language in print & in speech like a precision weapon. Alan Axelrod favors us with many quotes from the great man which we have heard all our life. The stories are lively & germane to his subject, 25 lessons. Well done.

Neatly blending historical events with leadership principles, Axelrod creates a thought-provoking and insightful look at the life and precedents set by Winston Churchill.

Starting with essential background, the author lays out the main subject's character and events that shaped it. He opens a door to the time period and it's mindsets, setting a clear stage for what is to come. After that, chapters are neatly arranged around core principles; each is exemplified by an event or period of Churchill's life, and the modern application of such a principle to CEOs and businesses is expounded.

The author writes extremely well; the language flowed smoothly and was easy to follow and become immersed in while remaining powerful and authoritative. I didn't feel like there was much in the way of a conclusion, but the book as a whole was an excellent read and well worth anyone's time.

Was not sure if this was the right book to buy or not but I turned out to be the correct one. It was much cheaper than the college book store. It is a very helpful and useful guide to public speaking, would recommend it to others.

Covers the bases

I'm a recent college grad working as a freelancer for weddings and special events (I'm a harpist) and taxes are a small nightmare for me, much less investing.

But as a freelancer, I must learn to invest- It would be absolutely foolish of me not to. Realistically, if I don't I won't be able to retire when I'd like to nor will I have as much money to live comfortably. With that in mind, I've been checking out a few investment books in my free time, and this was one of them. It covers all the bases you'd expect, but also some that fall into the category of 'why didn't I think of that' as well as 'that's pretty legit advice. He knows what he's talking about'.

Joseph Matthews explains what's important with ease; compound interest, investment protection, and inflation are all covered without needless Jargon so anyone can understand what he's talking about without the need for further questions. A recommended read for those starting out.

Well-written guide on investments

This is a surprisingly well-written guide on investments for beginners. The book starts out introducing the general concepts of wealth creation using compounding interest (the rule of 72). It continues to explain all the different types of investment instruments available such as stocks, bonds, options, futures, commodities and mutual funds. I particularly love the advice given on risk management and portfolio diversification. The last chapter on 401k investment is a real bonus. The only topic this book does not cover is real estate investment. If you don't know how to invest with your money, this 11-chapter book will give you a good head start.

Great book on the basics of investing

Great book on the basics of investing. Whether you went to school for Business or not, this book, provides you with much needed information about important investing items such as understanding compound interest, the risks involved with investing, inflation, and how to successfully invest in stocks, bonds, commodities, mutual funds, options and a 401k plan.
If you are new to investing and are trying to understand the ins and outs of how to invest and what you can expect from your investments over time, "Investing: How to Generate Wealth in today's Market" is the book you should pick up. I highly recommend this book!

Fair enough, but by doing so are you opening security holes you don't know how to find or fix? The newest edition of Hacking Linux Exposed helps you answer that question and solve many of the security problems you find. To a certain extent this book is a recipe collection in that it describes weaknesses in Linux (calling attention to specific distributions where appropriate). The authors stop short of explicitly showing you how to wage most kinds of attacks, a reasonable thing to do from an ethical point of view even though the instructions can be found easily on the Internet. Rather than do that, they give step-by-step instructions on how to defend against the attacks they catalog. The point is not, "Here's precisely how to bring down a server by means of an ACK storm," but rather, "Here's how to defend against such problems." They do demonstrate plenty of weaknesses, though, as in their coverage of the conversation that goes back and forth between an FTP server and its client.

Refreshingly honest, thoroughly enlightening

Given the complexity of Linux systems, and the years spent hardening such systems against would-be intruders, it is amazing how a simple, clever idea can still translate into a full-blown security exploit.
I really enjoyed the format of the book. The authors don't waste time on security theories, or explaining what Linux is. They know the reader is already familiar with these, and wants to know, in concrete terms, how a hacker sees your server, and will systematically breach its security until they get root access. The authors waste no time in revealing the tools of the trade, and the security-conscious would do well to read this book from cover to cover. It is not enough to just apply patches, and turn off unnecessary services (and surprisingly few admins even do this right). One must fully understand the mindset of the hacker, and see the server from the outside.
I truly believe that no other book right now can deliver such honesty and such useful information on Linux security. If you hope to secure your servers or go into the security field, definitely read this book. You will not be sorry. :)

Can't put it down!!

The book pulls you into a hackers/crackers mind! no boring bla-bla text that puts you to sleep in 3 minutes! the only reason I gave it 4 stars is that it didn't come with a CD! Most of the books I've read came with the programs they discussed in the book, This was my only let down. I've contacted the authors about some questions and I received a fast and curtious reply. Hats off to you Gents, and I must thank Brian for his reply,about to much security, your one of the reasons I've switched from windows to linux. Try and contact Bill if ya got a question about windows!
