About the Author

Rick Graziani teaches computer science and computer networking courses at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. Rick has worked and taught in the computer networking and information technology field for almost 30 years. Prior to teaching, Rick worked in IT for various companies including Santa Cruz Operation, Tandem Computers, and Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation. He holds an M.A. in computer science and systems theory from California State University Monterey Bay. Rick also does consulting work for Cisco and other companies. When Rick is not working, he is most likely surfing. Rick is an avid surfer who enjoys longboarding at his favorite Santa Cruz surf breaks.

Allan Johnson entered the academic world in 1999 after 10 years as a business owner/operator to dedicate his efforts to his passion for teaching. He holds both an M.B.A. and an M.Ed. in occupational training and development. He is an information technology instructor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 2003, Allan began to commit much of his time and energy to the CCNA Instructional Support Team, providing services to Networking Academy instructors worldwide and creating training materials. need Packet Tracer

Another reviewer remarked negatively about the so-called poor quality of the paper in the book. I simply do not see this with my copy. The pages are high quality and quite reflective, without being actually glossy. In the printing business, there are grades of paper quality, and while I'm not in that field, the pages are certainly not low grade.

As to the actual contents on those pages :) -

It looks like comprehensive coverage. Remember that this is a Cisco produced book, for a Cisco certificate and where the hardware used is Cisco. So by definition, you are getting an authoritative reference for exam preparation. Unlike a third party offering [I don't know if these actually exist for this Cisco exam/certificate]. So to play it safe, if you are serious about getting the qualification, this text may be the best choice.

The book has many examples of how to configure and otherwise manage routing. Instead of merely passively reading the text, you should manually try all the examples. Well, to save you time, these have been included in the accompanying CD. Related to this is the single most important point in the book. You need the Packet Tracer simulator. This does not come with the book, which advises you to ask your instructor, who has to be part of the Cisco Networking Academies. If you are trying to learn the material strictly on your own, then this will be harder to assimilate, short of you having access to another simulator or an actual network where you have administrative permissions.

Having said that, a subsidiary role is possible for the book. If you already run a network, which might have Cisco hardware, and you need a solid reference on routing protocols, try using this. It explains the common protocols at a level deep enough and suitable for a network administrator. And of course, while the protocols are meant to be implemented the same way, regardless of vendor, when it comes to the diagnostic output from Cisco hardware, the book is relevant to what you should see.

Fills a void on your game programming bookshelf

Many books exist that attempt to teach 3D programming, a specific API or engine or try to demonstrate an entire engine being developed from start to finish. Unfortunately, many of these books fail in their attempt to bring these subjects the attention they deserve. The "write your own engine" books are the worst offenders due to their lack of emphasis on the non-renderer portions of the engine. While the renderer is undeniably the sexiest topic, too little attention on the other systems tend to leave these books falling well short of their intended goal. While Game Coding Complete is not strictly an engine design and programming book, it focuses on many engine components that other books fall well short of addressing.

Gaming Coding Complete attempts to bridge the gap between your 3D API books and a well formed engine. McShaffry's book takes the opposite approach of most other books by moving quickly through the 3D chapters and concentrates on other engine systems that are frequently underdeveloped or ignored completely. The rendering chapters comprise only about 100 pages and if you wish to learn DirectX, OpenGL or general rendering theory this is not the book for you. Most of the books is dedicated to other engine systems such as caching, user input, event management and developing a robust scripting engine using Lua. Other chapters that are a bit more introductory include discussions of collison and physics, networking, multi-threading, AI and even a simple level editor written in C#. A simple game near the end of the book wraps up the previous chapters in an effort to utilize all of your previous work.

The book strives to explain how to design engine systems in a way that makes your engine maintainable and reusable. Great attention in paid to decoupling the engine components so that each system is not dependent on including the headers for every other system in order to function. In McShaffry's code, everything operates on it's own with only interface classes and message queues to communicate with other engine components. Whether you agree with the design pattern will be a matter of personal taste and experience, but it is well developed for fans of the design.

Unfortunately, while a great deal of attention has been payed to the design, many sections suffer from a lack of thorough explanation. The author assumes a working knowledge of C++ and a bit of DirectX, both of which make perfect sense, but the book tends to skip many details assuming a level of knowledge that is a bit high for a book of it's type. It is not strictly a length issue as the book is quite long at around 900 pages, but with so many topics to cover many details are skipped outright. In some chapters, the lack of thorough explanation is completely understandable. Physics, AI, network programming and writing code for multi-core processors are deserving of entire books (and many exist for all), but several of the other chapters provide less material than it seems should be available. The audio and user interface chapters seem rushed at best and fail to discuss many important topics in both. The worst offender is the complete lack of scene management in the 3D chapters. For a book that seems to pride itself on developing engine systems that are often ignored, there is no discussion of techniques and algorithms to manage large 3D scenes outside of the most basic frustum culling. Even a cursory introduction to a relatively simple BSP or portal algorithm would have been welcome. The chapter on the caching system does mention techniques to minimize performance hits for loading new level geometry and texture data, but the lack of discussion of methods to slice up your levels into manageable chunks leaves the chapters feeling a bit empty.

Gaming Coding Complete is a fine book that serves as a good introduction to under discussed topics. The "Complete" moniker is debatable, but given the volume of topics to be covered, it seems somewhat callous to suggest that it is false advertising. Nevertheless, the books seems to demand another couple of chapters and a bit more explanation of material covered with a lack of detail. It is clear the author is quite knowledgeable and the book is considerably better than many books that are dedicated to engine design. With the impending release of the fourth edition, perhaps Game Coding Complete can overcome its few flaws and deliver and even better book.

Excellent Guidance From a Game Programming Guru

As a newcomer to game development, this book has been worth its weight in gold to me. There are many books out there which can teach you how to use specific API's and mathematical concepts you need to build games, but few address the architectural and design-related questions as well as this one does. The author is obviously an experienced game programmer who can offer a lot of insight into how you should approach designing your project so you don't end up with a tangled, unmaintainable mess. Examples here include the author's recommendation for decoupling game components via the use of an event system, and a lightweight cooperative scheduling system for "processes" which must span multiple frames (e.g. animations). There's also a thorough example of how you should create a base "application" class that can abstract the plumbing associated with initialization and rendering, exposing simple methods to subclasses such as "Init", "Update Scene", and "Draw Scene". This sort of pattern can be seen in high-level frameworks out there today such as the XNA API. I'm an experienced programmer who had never done any game programming but had a really good idea, and this book helped me figure out fundamentally how I should build the game from an architectural point of view. It's surely saved me a lot of development man-hours.

There is also decent treatment here of the math fundamentals and some graphics programming, though I think programmers should probably look elsewhere for more comprehensive treatments of these subjects. If you're looking to get into game development, pick this one up and maybe another book on DirectX/OpenGL/whatever your graphics API of choice is.

Good for those who will understand

I bought this book a little bit early, and had to go review my C++ before i could fully use it, and when I did, I came to realize that I was holding THE book on game coding.

This book covers nearly everything, in that what the author doesn't cover (or one of the other guest authors) he gives you the next path you should go down in order to achieve your goals in that certain area of coding.

He also offers tons of tips and inside stories on what it's like working as a game developer in a recurring section called 'tales from the pixel mines' which are all very informative, and i enjoyed reading all of them.

Do not think, however, that this book will hold your hand throughout the process. In some parts of the example code the author literally says some thing like: "//type your own code here". this opens the readers' eyes to the fact that learning to make games is not a process of just being taught, but is mostly about discovering it for yourself (didn't Galileo say something like that?). Rest assured, when something has to be taught, the author teaches it, after all, at some point it wastes time to 're-invent the wheel' and that is where the true magic of this book comes into play. It leaves enough for YOU to do on your own, instead of just showing one way and expecting you to copy it. really is like having a teacher that you can open and learn from whenever you want.

in short, this is the best book on game programming I have ever had the pleasure to read, and once you have a good basis in Direct3D and can understand some advanced C++ concepts, you need to pick up this book. You NEED to.

I got my first glimpse of internal martial arts in the mid 1980's and I have been practicing Wu Tai Chi Chuan now for many years. The Wu fast set is not the easiest form to learn and this book to me has been a complete study guide loaded with valuable information to assist new students learning the Wu fast form. Even if you are not fortunate enough to have had an opportunity to visit China and study and learn from great teachers like Wu Ying Hua or Ma Yueh Liang, this book does offer a treasure of knowledge and insight into the art of Wu Tai Chi Chuan. This book is also more than worthy of being published with a hard cover, however the cover on this book does provide excellent protection of it's contents and the picture of Ma Yueh Liang featured on the front of the book is very dignified and in good taste! How can you not love a book written by Wu Ying Hua, Ma Yueh Liang and Shi Mei Ling! I highly recommend Wu Style Taiji "Fast Set" to anyone! Whether you are a martial arts enthusiast, beginner or just curious. If it is possible for you, this book is worth owning, reading and studying! I'd like to acknowledge and thank Gerald A.Sharp, Yang Shuyi and Yang Ying very much for translating this book in English and sharing it's knowledge and wisdom for everyone to enjoy!

When a psychiatrist is brought in, the staff members he meets use phrases like "battered children," "mental abuse" and "rage disorder." But when the hapless therapist mildly interrupts one of Mr. Steinhardt's red-faced tirades, he finds himself swept out the door on a tidal wave of invective.
Mr. Steinhardt makes this case for his own swinishness in his modest and even touching memoir, "No Bull: My Life In and Out of Markets," and the result is a breath of fresh air in a traditionally windy genre. Although proud of his accomplishments--"one dollar invested with me in 1967 would have been worth $481 on the day I closed the firm in 1995, versus $19 if it had been invested in a Standard & Poor's index fund"--he dwells as much or more on his failings. He made a lousy soldier, can't control his weight or his temper, can't muster a faith in God to match his devotion to Judaism, and plunges into despair when he occasionally falls short of the impossible performance standards he strives to maintain.
Paradoxically, the picture that emerges from the author's unremitting self-assessment is of a complex, learned and ultimately decent human being determined not just to struggle with his demons but to do something meaningful with his wealth. (Among other things, he finances a key organization for moderate Democrats and launches a drive to provide a free trip to Israel for every young Jew in the world.) Although he was raised by his selfless and loving mother, at the heart of Mr. Steinhardt's story is the author's deeply ambivalent relationship with his father. Sol Frank "Red" Steinhardt is a character right out of Saul Bellow or Philip Roth. A compulsive gambler from a tough section of Brooklyn who dropped out of school when he was 12, Red was married to Mr. Steinhardt's mother only long enough for Michael to be born. The elder Steinhardt, to whom Michael would come to bear an uncanny physical resemblance, drifted in and out of his son's life, turning up at crucial moments with sharp advice or a dubious pile of cash (besides gambling and hobnobbing with mobsters, Red dealt in stolen jewelry). Michael Steinhardt's education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated at 19, and his earliest stake in the stock market were both underwritten by his father.
Freudians will have afield day with this book, whose author clearly sublimated a familial predilection for financial risk into the socially acceptable outlet of the stock market. Mr. Steinhardt reports becoming obsessed with stocks during his impecunious boyhood and never letting go, even to this day, when he devotes himself mainly to charitable activities. Although he offers a cogent discussion of what kind of investments he looked for in his heyday, it's clear that at his Olympian level of achievement there are a lot of intangibles that the rest of us aren't going to learn from a book. I liked the book a lot, but not for its trading tips

Although I bought the book with the perception it would be a book on investing/trading techniques used by a well-respected investor, I liked it much more for what I did not expect to read.
The book is basically a biography, in which he describes how his father, his religion (even tough he calls himself an atheist) and his education have had an impact on his life, in private as well as in his work.
The way he writes is entertaining, and I found myself finishing the book within only a few days.
Not a book about investing. Don't buy it to improve your trading results!
Buy it for learning about the person behind stellar investment performance.

The Greek Gods in their shining glory, and darkest gloom.

Never have I read a book quite like this one. This is not a book full of retelling of myths, but a book full of detailed info on the relevance of these gods to the ancient Greeks. Information on their worship, their origins prior to Olympian times, and many of the contradicting stories of their births, and how these stories relate to the times from which they came. If you love mythology, but are curious as to the more down to earth aspects of these gods, read this, and you will find yourself seeing the gods as more than just the vulgar fictions of a primitive society. Perhaps you will even begin to see them as they should be seen, as Gods.

Exceptional Mythology book!

This may be the most thorough and most readable book I've read on mythology, and I've read dozens. Currently, I'm using it as the primary source for the myth course I teach. It provides information about gods that most other basic myths neglect, often fascinating as well as significant. Get it now - it's been remaindered late in 2000 and will soon be out of print.

I wish I had read this book when I was in High School. It may not be ovid, or homer, but the book is great. Its simple to read and hard to put down. Praise the Muses for allowing this book to come to being.

Ok but not the best

I bought this book to learn how to program from complete scratch. After about 3 months of practice, I feel very confident in my skill. BUT the book does tend to be very wordy and I often find myself re-reading sections just to figure out a piece of syntax. Honestly, my (little) skill came form practice practice practice, and not reading a book. However, the book does gives practice problems and some decent explanations of how to develop the algorithm.

I recommend it if you can find it cheap. Use tutorials to clear things up that the book isn't clear about.

This is a great book for CSE 1222 at Ohio State. It actually covers more material than the lecture did so if you read this AND go to lecture, there is no reason that you won't get an A. The book does a great job at making everything clear and explains why certain codes are chosen on certain lines. Overall, a great introductory book to C++

Not Thorough in Coverage of Important Topics

Dale and Weems wrote a nice, easy-to-learn and highly organized book for introducing C++ in the 1990's as reflected in the earlier editions of this particular work.

However, given that ANSI C++ has expanded it scope considerably over the last two decades, it is now very different from the original C language it was based on and came from, sharing a lot of syntax with then. Thus a typical C++ book is now "thicker" being that so many more language features have since been added, rendering it somewhat unfamiliar even if one knows the C language very well, aside from being more definitively an object-oriented language nowadays.

Unfortunately, the book here does not reflect that change or at least not up-to-date in its coverage of topics. It still retains a lot of Dale and Weems' style on using schematics and illustrations to explain different concepts and does a halfway decent job at that. But, quite frankly, the book pales by comparison with those presenting a more up-to-date or modern perspective comparison, e.g., the excellent works (collection of books) by the Wade Group and the thorough and not- so-elementary Introductory C++ textbook by Ivor Horton.

All in all - not a good buy, at least not for me, being that it was not a good experience buying the book at a high price even though I got a nearly new one in excellent condition, not to mention the obsolete approach the authors took in updating the once time honored and excellent book.
