A variety of interesting problems regarding the motion of satellites and other space vehicles is discussed in Chapter 4, which includes the two-body problem, orbital change due to impulsive thrust, long-range ballistic trajectories, and the effect of the Earth's oblateness. The fifth and sixth chapters describe gyrodynamics and the dynamics of gyroscopic instruments, covering such topics as the displacement of a rigid body, precession and nutation of the Earth's polar axis, oscillation of the gyrocompass, and inertial navigation.
Chapter 7 is an examination of space vehicle motion, with analyses of general equations in body conditions and their transformation to inertial coordinates, attitude drift of space vehicles, and variable mass. The eighth chapter discusses optimization of the performance of single-stage and multistage rockets. Chapter 9 deals with generalized theories of mechanics, including holonomic and non-holonomic systems, Lagrange's Equation for impulsive forces, and missile dynamics analysis.
Throughout this clear, comprehensive text, practice problems (with answers to many) aid the student in mastering analytic techniques, and numerous charts and diagrams reinforce each lesson. 1961 edition.

small book with huge impact

Introduction to Space Dynamics

When this little book came out, in the early sixties, it created quite an impact. For one thing, it marks the transition from the "old astrodynamics" to the "new". The term "astrodynamics" is attributed to the late Samuel Herrick, and was coined in the forties or early fifties. Prior to sputnik, astrodynamics was heavily centered on determining the orbits of comets and asteroids from optical observations. When artificial satellites became imminent, the emphasis shifted to determining physical constants (e.g., figure of the earth) from satellite tracking data.

"Introduction to Space Dynamics" represents a new departure. First, it places considerable emphasis on launch vehicle (rocket) performance, including some optimization analysis based on the calculus of variations. The older texts tended to completely ignore this topic (possibly because much was classified). Also, except for Lawden's monograph, many of the papers on optimized launch vehicle performance were difficult to obtain - and generally difficult to read. Second, Thomson inserts considerable material on gyroscopic motion, stabilized platforms, and inertial navigation. This represents a transition away from the optical-tracking-orientation of earlier texts. Thomson's book also enjoys the benefit of more modern notation, and uses vector and matrix notation throughout.

A curious included topic -- to which I was first introduced by this very book -- is "jet damping." The jet damping effect tends to dampen-out any angular motion of a rocket during thrusting periods. However, the effect is small to the point of usually being negligible. (Witness the notorious instability of rockets, particularly unguided ones.) Considering how much material Thomson devotes to this very specialized topic, one gets the impression that Thomson himself must have performed considerable research on this, and was determined to pass his knowledge on.

It is almost inevitable to compare this book with Herrick's "Astrodynamics", which came out some ten years after "Introduction to Space Dynamics." While Herrick's book is without question beautifully written and very comprehensive, it is basically backward-looking. Thomson's book, on the other hand, was very progressive for its time. Consequently, Thomson's book was very influential; Harrick's book was something of a curiosity, and almost certainly a disappointment for its author.

Despite the forty-some years since its debut, "Introduction to Space Dynamics" is still valuable, and should be read by everyone seriously interested in astrodynamics.

Good Deal

As an electrical engineer working in the space industry, I've been using this book as a self-study reference to better understand the issues related to spacecraft dynamics and control. It lays out the basics of rigid body/space vehicle motion and also contains a nice little introduction to orbital mechanics. Despite the date of publication almost all of the material is still relevant today and is a great bargain for ~$10. I noticed a couple of the reviews mention the difficulty of the material - I would say if you've studied calculus, linear algebra, and physics (mechanics) you have a shot at learning it but it would definitely help if you've taken a college-level dynamics course as well. If you don't have this background you're going to get overwhelmed.

Really good; an excellent introduction to the field

This is really well-written. Although the introduction claims that the text is outdated, it still provides a great introduction to space dynamics, astrodynamics, and dynamics generally. There is an implied understanding in vector mathematics before beginning; the book has an overview of vector calculus, but I think the author assumes you already know it. I actually read this book before taking my undergraduate classes in engineering, and I referenced it many times when my own textbook wasn't as clear as this is. Thomson does use a lot of math, to back up everything he says, but he doesn't bog the text down like math books tend to do. I'm still using some of the math notation I picked up from this book, and my teachers hate it.

Interesting and Somewhat Informative

Good read and a lot of interesting content, but not much for business ethics. However, hope to use some ideas in a way that can be applied toward business. The book if very tiny with a nice hard cover. I read it in a couple hours while sitting at the beach.

Fell in love with the characters

“She’s going to break his heart.”

This book was so good! I had a silly smile on my face after I finished reading it. I even told my husband how cute it was. By now, he understands my crazy love for fictional characters.

From the moment JLA said she was writing about Stephanie, I knew I was looking forward to her story. Remember, Stephanie is the girl that had a thing with both Cam and Jase before they met their true loves.

Steph has moved away from home and close to her new job at the mixed martial art center. She's carrying one of her moving boxes the first time she meets Nick. Nick is not only gorgeous but available. He invites her to the bar he works at and Steph can't resist going there. After a very passionate encounter, they both know the drill. Neither is ready for a relationship. A one-night-stand is the only thing they are looking for except life is tricky that way.

I was swooning all over the place with Nick. He had a way of showing his feelings with actions. He had this hidden sweetness, loyalty, and protectiveness that makes him so appealing to me.

As for Steph, she was a strong heroine. A normal girl with a normal libido. She wasn't mean or rude. She actually was someone I would love to be friends with. In a way, she was vulnerable too and I loved that Katie and Roxy were there for her when she needed support. I'm hoping Katie gets a book.

JLA has written so many of my favorite series including this one. I can't wait to read Fire in You.

Forever With You

It shows true talent to take a character who isn’t even on your radar giving then a truly beautiful, and enticing story. That’s exactly what Jennifer did with Forever With You. She turned one character’s flaws into something relateable, and matched her perfectly with her soul mate. I enjoyed this book for so many reasons, and one being it was unexpected, and with this series, each book is as different than the last. It’s a fresh romance filled with everything that makes us blush in the cheeks, and weak in the knees.

We first met Nick and Stephanie in two separate Wait For You novels. It’s a small world after all! I didn’t much like Stephanie. She wasn’t on my list of characters I would have chosen for their own story, but that shows you how much I know, because Stephanie worked her way right into my heart. We really get to know her, and understand her. Nick was a character; I couldn’t quite figure out, but wanted to. That’s where the mystery. You see; Nick and Stephanie are what I would call relationship phobic. They enjoy one-night stands, and not having to deal with the hassle of falling in love and being close to anyone. Then you throw these two together, and their similarities are jolting. They meet coincidently when Nick runs into Stephanie as she’s moving in, and helps her with a box, no that’s not innuendo. They smiled. She blushed, flirted a little, and hinted that he worked at a bar close by. Stephanie was insanely attracted to Nick, and goes to the said bar. One thing leads to another and Nick ends up at her apartment not to help her carry a box. They have a quick romp, and he leaves, neither of them having any expectations, but you might have heard of crazy Katy and her psychic mouth saying this.

“It’s her. The one you’re going to fall for and fall hard. Oh, boy, you have so met your match. Totally.”

If Katy says it has to be true, right? Yes, Nick has met his match. He knows it. Everyone knows it. It just may take Nick and Stephanie to get with the program, but when they do it’s magnificent. No, I’m not giving anything away, because the story takes off from this point, and you will be glued to the pages. It’s emotional, and endearing. Parts may break your heart in two, but when you get to the end, you won’t be disappointed, oh yeah there’s something super special at the end.

Stubborn, strong, hard, caring, are all ways to describe Nick and Stephanie. You wouldn’t even have guessed how complex these characters could be. They give as good as they get, and you will easily want to jump into the book and be a part of their world. Stephanie becomes that friend who always has your back, who you can tell anything to. Nick is the stand-up guy, who will protect you when you are in need.

Jennifer gives us what we need in this story a part from the sensitive material, we get the sweet, and humorous dialogue we have grown to love from these books, and the true passage into being adults.

Fans of this series will fall head over heels in love, and for me like every book I read from this author, I’m left wanting more, so much more.

In love with this series. I was happy when Nick was finally being given a book. He was always just out of reach and brooding in the background during the last two books and I really wanted to know more about him. I'm glad that Stephanie made another appearance. She showed redemption in this book compared to when she was initially introduced.
The topics covered in this book was very heartfelt and very real. The things Nick and Stephanie had to endure and ultimately find a way to ease the pain were hard but working through them together as they did pulled at heart strings. I'm also glad that Cam and Avery's wedding was written in this book. I loved them (being as they were the first couple in the series) and it was good to see their relationship progress the way it did.
