About the Author
Claudia Neuhauser is Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Director of the Center for Learning Innovation at the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR). She is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor, and Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor. She received her diploma in Mathematics from the Universit�t Heidelberg (Germany), and a PhD in Mathematics from Cornell University. Before joining UMR in July 2008, she was Professor and Head in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities, and a faculty member in mathematics departments at the University of Southern California, University of Wisconsin—Madison, University of Minnesota, and University of California—Davis. Dr. Neuhauser’s research is at the interface of ecology and evolution. She investigates effects of spatial structure on community dynamics, in particular, the effect of competition on the spatial structure of competitors and the effect of symbionts on the spatial distribution of their hosts. In addition, her research in population genetics has resulted in the development of statistical tools for random samples of genes. In her role as Director of the Center for Learning Innovation at the University of Minnesota Rochester, Dr. Neuhauser is responsible for the development of the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences. The Center promotes a learner-centered, concept-based learning environment in which ongoing assessment guides and monitors student learning and is the basis for data-driven research on learning. Dr. Neuhauser’s interest in furthering the quantitative training of biology undergraduate students has resulted in a textbook on Calculus for Biology and Medicine and a web page Numb3r5 Count! Poorly written and edited

This is a terrible textbook which I believe has not been proofread and/or edited at all before being pushed for publication. I am taking a class that deals only with one chapter in this book, Probability and Statistics and I have found numerous errors, mathematical inaccuracies, and formatting anomalies.

The answers in the back of the book are inconsistent with the correct answers, the answers in the supplementary solutions manual, are also inconsistent with the correct answers, and contain many grammatical and mathematical typos. In one such instance during the exercise problems after a section, the numbering jumps from 48 to 50, leaving no mention of question 49. Instead of correcting this error, the solutions in the back of the book begin to refer to problem 50 as 49, resulting in every problem thereafter being inaccurate.

For the most part, the example problems in the section do not correlate to the more difficult questions in the textbook even slightly, with one question referring to a Bernstein inequality, a theorem which had yet to be even mentioned in the chapter. Inspection of the index reveals that the ONLY time this theorem is referenced to in the book is within the question asking about it itself.

All in all, a terribly written textbook with little to no effort put into the mathematical theory. At the hefty price of over $100, I am not satisfied and will not be taking any more classes that involve this textbook and author ever again.

A terrible book full of errors.

I find calculus to be a very exciting subject, and so I opened up Neuhauser's book with the right frame of mind. The subject has a lot of application to medicine and biology, but this textbook fails to bring students a reasonable learning experience. I find it surprising that, despite being on its third edition, the book still reads like a draft in need for a few more readings by an editor. I cannot fathom why professors still assign this lousy textbook. Here's why.

1.) It has numerous errors. Many of the answers in the back of the book are not correct. Sometimes these errors are small, such as mixing up a 4 with a 9. Other times these errors are more substantial.

2.) Though it does have exercises related to biology and medicine, there are not nearly enough, and explanations are rarely given. I've seen about equal amounts of biomedical word questions in other non-biomedical math textbooks, and at least there they were usually explained in full. This book fails to reasonably portray the application of calculus to biology and medicine. There is plenty of material Neuhauser could have included to make his book exciting or relevant, yet he almost entirely neglected to.

3.) Explanations often skip vital steps, which are enough to confuse someone learning calculus. This textbook almost feels like it's intended as a refresher for someone who has already taken the course. But then, such a reader will likely find themselves irked by the book's errors.

Love, love, love!

I actually discovered Melissa and her blog, Satisfying Eats, earlier this year. I had been gluten-free for a number of years and was trying to go completely grain-free and low carb. I had discovered the almond flour recipes (good, but heavy and wet) and the coconut flour recipes (lighter, but eggy and dry), and was experimenting with combining the two. There was Melissa's blog. She was doing exactly that, and she was creating the kind of food I *liked* and she was way ahead of me.

Several months later, our birthdays and playdates have been graced with her vanilla butter cake and chocolate cupcakes. Her chocolaty frosties have saved more days that I can count, and everyone in my family LOVES her blueberry syrup on pancakes and southern style "corn"bread. My husband, especially, was stunned by the "corn" bread, and the blueberry syrup... well, just the best thing ever. Some other favorites are her no-grain granola (really, you have to try that one), sandwich buns, dinner drop biscuits, and pumpkin creme brulee.

So I was really excited when she said she was coming out with a cookbook. I wondered how much new stuff would be there. After all, we've all seen that, right? A new cookbook that is really just a compilation of the old stuff. I shouldn't have doubted her. As I looked through the table of contents, the word that kept popping into my mind was "prolific." Prolific. How on earth does she have time to do all this???

Anyway, I immediately set about trying out some new things. It will surprise no one who knows me that the first thing I made was chocolate. I made the refrigerator fudge. It actually didn't set up quite right, but I think that's my fault. The flavor was fabulous; my 2 year old keeps asking for it! Then I made the cinnamon raisin bread, corn puppies, and her Daddy's cornflake clusters. I won't tell you how many of those I have eaten already. I think that recipe alone warrants the purchase price. Then I noticed that my sampling was heavy on desserts, so I made her cabbage "noodles," and sweet baked "beans" for dinner. Wonderful, all of it. I can't wait to try the pound cake and "sugar" cookies next week.

One of the things I like about Melissa's style, aside from the fact that she seems to like the same food I do, is her warm, conversational tone. When I'm reading her recipes, it's sort of like "just do this, and if you want it more like that, then do that." After all, we're just hanging out in the kitchen, making good food, and having a great time, right? That's how it feels.

She likes to use Kal brand stevia. Recipe after recipe calls for Kal stevia. I felt like she was nagging me, so finally, I got some. I am so glad I did. She's right; it's different from the other stuff, and so much better. Anyway, most of her recipes call for a certain amount of stevia, but it always specifies to adjust for taste. I like that. It's not rocket science; it just needs to taste good.

Really, I don't think I've ever not liked one of her recipes. I am a tweaker, though, and I often make adjustments to any recipe I'm trying just because I have different ingredients on hand or I think it will work better, or I'm being lazy. My most-often tweaks for Melissa's recipes are to use additional sweeteners for chocolate items (I like to combine stevia with liquid splenda and/or sugar alchols for a synergistic effect) and to double whatever recipe I'm making. I'll often double the recipe the first time I make it now. I know that if it is Melissa's recipe, the end result will be delicious. I haven't been disappointed yet.

Best Cookbook Ever for both tastebuds & health!!

Excellent & delicious recipes--MUCH more delicious than cooking with wheat & grains. You'll enjoy the food SO much and you'll feel so much better than you've Ever felt in your life that you will never ever eat any other way again.

This cookbook is very well organized & has wonderful, thoughtful, valid, & vital sections on the how & why for using these wonderful recipes, shopping for food, stocking your pantry, organizing your cooking-day/week in order to easily create these recipes for all your meals, and good cookware to use although you don't need much more than is already in the average kitchen.

The kindle edition needs some editing & tweeking. 1) Many recipes do not have carb counts included--the author states in the beginning that this is included in all recipes (for instance No-Grain Granola/Cereal and Ricotta Waffles/Pancakes do not include carb count). 2) The Table of Contents is listed as "Contents" at the beginning of the book, so it does not show up in the settings as a link and you'll either have to search for the Table of Contents or go to the beginning of the book & flip through pages until you get to the Table of Contents, which is 5 page turns, I know because I've had to do it so many times. 3) The section on "Crock Pot Recipes" in the Table of Contents does not have links from the recipes in that list to the page in the book as do all the other recipes in the Table of Contents. They simply list the page number, which is not relevant in an eBook, so you have to do a search for those recipes. 4) The links to her excellent blog are listed as [...](sic--yes, it is misspelled in the book) which takes you to a page that says that address does not exist because it is not the correct address. The correct address is [...] 5) Most of the recipes that include using other recipes in the book have a link in the original recipe that takes you to the other recipe (like French Toast will also give you a link to the necessary Cinnamon Bread recipe), but some do not: they will state that the other recipe you will also need to use is on a certain page number, which again is not relevant in an eBook, so you have to do a search for the second recipe (Easy Crunchy Chips/Crackers states you can serve it with Amazing Salsa on page 35 and does not give a link to the salsa recipe page).

In spite of the eBook faults, it is still an excellent cookbook. I have bought the kindle version for myself. When the hard-copy is in print I will buy one for myself and two for gifts. Highly recommended for everyone who eats food!!

UPDATE, 01-16-201
The ebook version of the cookbook has been updated almost entirely in order to include most of the links that were missing when I first reviewed it (above). There are still missing links (but not nearly as many as before). For example, the Pecan Pie Ice-Cream recipe refers to another recipe this way: "Candied" Nuts (pg )--no page number & no link provided, and there are a few more such instances. Also, in the Table of Contents the "Crock Pot Recipes" and "Appendix" headings still do not link to those sections; otherwise the Table of Contents is all linked and very well done. Grammar and spelling, for the most part, is much, much better than in the blog, so the narrative in the cookbook is very easy to understand on the first read-through, you don't have to read it again to make sure you understood correctly.

Having said all that, the recipes themselves are virtually flawless in execution, very easy to duplicate, and reliable results can be depended on every time. PLUS, THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I never cared much for bread anyway, so I had no problem letting go of it when I went GFSF, but I LOVE All of Melissa's bread recipes and happily include them in my meal plans. Her pizza and waffles are SO much better than those dishes Ever were when made with wheat flour by anybody or any restaurant. She has REALLY spoiled me for eating out: only the very best restaurants and steakhouses can measure up to the recipes in this cookbook and on her blog! Again: this cookbook is highly recommended for everyone who eats food!

Love this cookbook!!

I stumbled across Melissa's story in the fall of 2012 and I am so glad I did! It was after reading about her reason for going grain, gluten and sugar free (and low carb) that I decided to try it and see if it would help me with my stomach issues and boy did it help ~ I am like a new person! I haven't felt this good in a very long time! I started reading her blog and EVERY recipe I could find of hers so when this book came out I was SO excited, I purchased it right away. All her recipes are easy, healthy and DELICIOUS! I have yet to try one our family doesn't like. From breakfast ideas to desserts they are all fantastic! Her condiments are fabulous as well... easy to follow with healthy ingredients. From homemade mayo, chicken stock, tomato sauce, to breadless bread crumbs (I love to bread my chicken, fish, vegetables like eggplant, zucchini, etc. the possibilities are endless and this recipe is good on ALL of them!) I would HIGHLY recommend this book! I am very excited to get her next book as soon as it comes out too! I would like to thank Melissa for all her hard work in the kitchen and creating all these delicious and healthy recipes ~ they have changed my life for the better!!

On July 6, 1906, Baron Gustaf Mannerheim boarded the midnight train from St. Petersburg, charged by Tsar Nicholas II to secretly collect intelligence on the Qing Dynasty’s sweeping reforms that were radically transforming China. One of the last Tsarist secret agents, Mannerheim chronicled almost every facet of China’s modernization, from education reform and foreign investment to Tibet’s struggle for independence.

Central Asia and China -- a century ago and today

"The horse that leaps through clouds" was Baron Carl Gustaf Mannerheim - one of those people from several generations ago who seemed to lead enough lives and have enough adventures for about ten people of today. He is perhaps THE national hero of Finland. In 1918, Mannerheim led the military forces of the "Whites" in their defeat of Bolshevik armies, thereby securing the liberation and independence of Finland. In 1939, he again assumed command of the Finnish military in its defense against much superior Soviet forces, thwarting the Soviet Union in its campaign to make Finland an occupied satellite. Yet, before the World Wars Mannerheim had been an officer in the Imperial Army of Tsar Nicholas II and, seemingly, a devoted supporter of the Tsar, even when the Tsar was repressing his fellow Finns.

This book was inspired by one of Mannerheim's exploits on behalf of Nicholas II - a two-year espionage mission into Central Asia and China. From 1906 to 1908, Mannerheim, nominally traveling as a Finn collecting archaeological and ethnographic materials for a museum in Helsinki, traversed the remote autonomous areas of Central Asia and on into China, gathering economic, political, and military information for the Tsar. Along the way, in Kashgar, he was given a Chinese passport with a Chinese name - Ma Dahan, which Mannerheim, with both romantic and literary license, translated as "the horse that leaps through clouds".

Author Eric Enno Tamm determined to retrace Mannerheim's journey one century later. THE HORSE THAT LEAPS THROUGH CLOUDS is Tamm's account of both his trek and Mannerheim's. Tamm interweaves the two accounts deftly. Nonetheless, it is Tamm's travels in the latter half of 2006 that constitute the principal reason to read this book. Tamm takes us through Azerbaijan and then three of the "Stans" - Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan - and then we follow him from far West China to Beijing. In some of the Central Asian republics, Tamm was assigned a "minder" (and in Turkmenistan he was thrown in jail for a very uncomfortable night), but he rarely was deemed important enough to be given "favored visitor" tours or receive official government "chamber of commerce" presentations, so his experiences probably were more nitty-gritty and realistic than those of most Western visitors.

Nearly three quarters of the book is devoted to his (and Mannerheim's) travels through China, so one naturally learns more about China than the Central Asian countries. Still, for me, his reports on contemporary conditions in all of the countries he visited were highly informative. Likewise, the occasional, non-pedantic history lessons he gives.

Much of Mannerheim's route - and, thus, Tamm's route as well - was along what history has come to call "The Silk Road." Tamm discusses how that region now has become the greatest energy corridor on earth (with 33 percent of the world's proven gas reserves, 9 percent of the world's oil, and 36 percent of its coal) and how those carbon fuel deposits are being exploited in hasty, pell-mell fashion, transforming the old "Silk Road" into what Tamm calls the "Soot Road". It makes for a rather depressing picture. Equally sad are the repeated accounts of vanishing languages, cultures, and even peoples (for example, the Yugurs). In Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia, the main street is strewn with scooter shops blaring Chinese pop music, KFCs, Pizza Huts, and Chinese billboards advertising new condo developments. Tamm writes that along that street "you can see the future of Tibet."

In general, Tamm is rather critical of the new China and he is rather guarded in his assessment of its future. As he sees it, "China remains beset by problems", which he discusses and illustrates anecdotally at some length. THE HORSE THAT LEAPS THROUGH CLOUDS is a very informative book and quite readable. I also want to compliment the publisher on the layout and typography (including the small, discrete page numbers).

History as The Future?

Apart from the many parallels between the the treks of 1906 and 2006, I was enthralled by the journey across the southern tier of the former USSR and the journey into China. After reading each chapter, I 'flew' by Google Earth to the locations and opened photos and Youtube sources that showed me the people and geography. The concluding chapters left me wondering about and discussing with friends the issues regarding the final days of the Qing Dynasty and the challenges facing the Chinese Communist Party today. You will not be disappointed with the travel and political observations from the treks.

Excellent Research, Writing, and Storytelling

In my mind, Eric Enno Tamm's book ought to be at or near the top of everyone's reading list.
It will have special appeal to those of us who have Finnish ancestry because it is about the notable Finn Baron Gustaf Mannerheim, and his espionage expedition (as a Russian spy) from St. Petersburg all the way to Beijing, China, in 1906-08. The title is taken from Mannerheim's Chinese name, Ma Dahan, meaning "the horse that leaps through clouds."
In 2006, Tamm retraces Mannerheim's epic journey across the Silk Road from St. Petersburg to Beijing, and as Tamm has written, "[I] discovered both seismic differences and eerie similarities between the China of today and the country Mannerheim visited a century ago."
Yet, the book is far from being nostalgia for Finns. This is an adventure tale that has the feel of a novel that any reader can enjoy. But even more so, because Tamm is a very knowledgeable historian and critical observer, it is a book that ultimately reminds us of both the immense political and environmental changes that have taken place on this planet in the last 100 years, and at the same time reminds us of all the corrupt political power-tripping that has remained unchanged in that period of time.
Here's a case in point: Tamm, while preparing for his journey following Mannerheim's footsteps across Asia, visited with Craig Murray who was formerly a British ambassador to Uzbekistan. They discussed Murray's involvement in discovering torture practices benefitting both the US and Britain, and they talked about the idea that American involvement in Central Asia was "only about fighting militant Islam."
"The fundamental motives are more basic than that," Murray told me. "It's about oil and gas contracts." That, according to Murray, is the prize in the New Great Game. A century ago, the game was quite simple: two players, Russia and Britain, competed to control hapless khanates that were economically and militarily backward. Today, the United States, Russia, and increasingly China are attempting to exert influence and control over the region's rich resources. Corrupt autocrats have used these petroleum deposits to become obnoxiously wealthy and powerful, crushing domestic movements that challenge their authority and playing foreign powers against each other. As Murray explained, Enron, the American energy giant, had initially paid $100 million in bribes to President Karimov's family for lucrative petroleum contracts. However, when Enron declared bankruptcy as a result of massive fraud, the contracts were resold to Russia's Gazprom.
Tamm's book begins 100 years ago with Mannerheim, but brings us fully up-to- date about current events. It is a very important contribution to our understanding of today's political and ecological realities. If I rated the books that I review, it would get 6 points on a 5 point scale. Excellent research, writing and storytelling.
